Ethan Cutkosky Is Returning to Law & Order: SVU as the Sinister Henry Mesner
There have been dozens, if not hundreds, of chilling villains on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit over the years, but many will agree that Ethan Cutkosky’s Henry Mesner is a truly bad seed. And SVU just revealed Cutkosky is set to make a goosebump-inducing return in Season 27.
How to Watch
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit returns Thursday, January 8 at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock.
Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) is in no shortage of haunting brush-ins throughout her day, but few could forget one of her youngest assailants she has ever crossed paths with: Henry Mesner. Boasting a rattling performance from Shameless star Cutskosky, the squad faced an unlikely perpetrator who led them on a mind-boggling investigation that only became more unsettling with time.
After appearing in two previous episodes of SVU, Cutskosky is slated to return in an upcoming Season 27 episode, promising plenty of twists and turns on the horizon. The official Law & Order Instagram made the announcement, sharing a cheeky video of Captain Benson in the interrogation room with an all-grown-up Henry Mesner.
In the clip, Cutskosky asks Hargitay’s Benson for a martini. “Sir, this is Law & Order: SVU,” Benson schools him, to which he says, “Can you make it a double?” The caption teased, “Catch Ethan Cutkosky guest-starring on #SVU soon.”
SVU fans are already buzzing about the return of Ethan Cutkosky’s Henry Mesner, more than happy to get an update from the dastardly foe, who is now all grown up. “Round 3! Let’s go!” one fan commented, while another echoed: “WAIT HENRY MESNER PART 3!!???”
Ethan Cutkosky first appeared as Henry Mesner in Law & Order: SVU Season 14

Cutkosky joined the SVU universe in Season 14, Episode 19 (“Born Psychopath”), making his first appearance in 2013. While some criminals are shaped into a life of misdeeds, Cutskosky’s 10-year-old Henry Mesner seemed truly bad to the bone after the squad got a call about the boy’s younger sister, Ruby, who was being repeatedly abused by what she claimed was a “monster.”
After a babysitter revealed that the “monster” was Ruby’s own brother, the detectives discovered a similar track record of Henry physically assaulting his classmates. Benson tried to encourage Henry’s parents to seek psychiatric help for the boy, but they didn’t want him to be labeled at his young age.
After Henry later slashed his mother’s hand with a knife, SVU psych specialist Dr. Huang (B.D. Wong) determined that Henry was a psychopath, lacking sympathy or empathy for other people. After the Mesners agreed to send Henry to a facility for severe cases like his, Henry decided to apprehend his family and set the home on fire, calling Benson to report signs of smoke amid the blaze.
Once arriving on the scene, the police found Henry gone, quickly deducing that he was the one who started the fire in an effort to kill his family. Not wanting to go to the facility, Henry had snapped, soon running away to a friend’s house to steal a firearm from the family, shooting their white dog Snowball, and taking a 5-year-old boy hostage during his tirade.
While Nick Amaro (Danny Pino) was able to talk Henry into releasing the child, Henry shot Amaro in the stomach instead. Henry was wrestled to the ground and restrained by the SVU, while Amaro’s bulletproof vest saved his life. Henry was subsequently sent to a juvenile detention center until he was 18 years old. Upon hearing this news, Henry cried along with his parents, but soon turned stoic as they looked away.
Ethan Cutkosky returned as Henry Mesner in Law & Order: SVU Season 22
After first wreaking havoc for the squad in Season 14, Cutkosky’s Henry Mesner was released from the juvenile detention center in Season 22, Episode 14 (“Post-Graduate Psychopath”). Henry wasted little time slipping back into his sinister ways, turning up the intensity upon his release.
After spending eight years in custody, Henry’s therapist declared him recovered from his psychopathy; he was no longer a sociopath or danger to society. This psychologist, however, was dead wrong, as proven by the discovery of a college student, who’d been tied up, tortured, sexually assaulted, and nearly beaten to death in her dorm room.

The SVU detectives could tell their suspect was particularly evil, especially after learning he was a complete stranger who seemed to be focused on stealing the student’s stuffed white dog. After connecting some dots from Henry’s actions nearly a decade prior, the SVU followed that lead, soon learning that Henry was the responsible.
To make matters worse, the squad soon discovered the murdered bodies of Henry’s father, his new stepmother, and the couple’s young child. After the detectives spoke with his former therapists, they realized that Henry tricked the entire staff into believing that he had recovered by mimicking his colleagues.
Ruby was fortunately with a friend during the slayings, but Henry’s trail of blood was far from over. After terrorizing several others while on the run from the SVU, Henry eventually abducted Ruby, holding her at gunpoint until Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) was able to apprehend him. Rollins realized he’d spent his entire time in custody planning his vengeful massacre.
The detectives faced many ethical dilemmas during the arraignment: Henry clearly needed mental health resources. As a certified psychopath, he was owed that, and he wouldn’t get adequate care in the prison system. Still, Henry had shown that he was a liability in a facility, as well.
During the trial, after the judge legally declared Henry mentally sane, he exploded into a fit of rage, stabbing A.D.A. Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) in the ear. The SVU realized Henry had simply wanted to avoid prison, hoping he’d return to the mental facility.
The last fans saw Henry Mesner was when Rollins visited him in prison, discovering him to be a husk of who he used to be due to the myriad of sedatives the officers had him on. Despite his near-vegetative state, Rollins warned Henry that if he ever was released and went after Carisi or her loved ones again, she’d kill Henry herself. Following this grave warning, Henry simply smirked.
